PICK: Choosing the Right Storage Unit for Your Needs
There are several types of storage units and it can be difficult to figure out which one is best for your valuables. Let’s take a look at the most popular types of self-storage.
Climate Controlled units are air-conditioned units that are located inside of a building and are temperature controlled to stay within a temperature range to protect your valuables from extreme heat or cold. This type of storage is best for furniture, clothing, books, bedding, and appliances.
Drive-Up or outdoor storage units are comparable to your garage and can be accessed by pulling your vehicle right up to the unit. They are popular because of their convenience and accessibility. The temperature and humidity in these units is determined by the outside temperature. This type of storage is best for cars, tools, garden equipment, and outdoor furniture.
PREP: Preparing Your Furniture
This task can seem overwhelming when you don’t know where to start. Don’t worry, we have some helpful tips to get you started.
Clean your furniture. It is important to thoroughly clean your furniture to protect it from insects, mildew, and other pests. Dusting and vacuuming alone are not enough; you will need to use an upholstery or steam cleaner when possible. Don’t forget about those hidden corners or hard-to-get areas.
Protecting your furniture during the move and while in storage. Cover all of your furniture with a protective layer like moving blankets, plastic, or shrink-wrap which will protect it from dust and damage. Use mattress covers for couch cushions and mattresses. Moving blankets are great for leather or wood furniture to prevent dings and scratches.
Disassemble furniture. Most furniture is meant to be disassembled before moving. Be sure to keep the parts for each piece of furniture together (ziplock bags work great!) and secure it to the piece of furniture (shrink-wrap works well and won’t leave tape residue).
PACK: How to Pack Your Storage Unit
When recommended, leave furniture covered to prevent moisture and dust from building up. Heavy items like dressers and washer/dryers should be placed on the floor and lighter items like couch cushions should be stacked on top. Place items that you won’t need right away in the unit first. This will give you more space at the front of the unit to place the items you will need to access frequently.
